what i am into: january 2012

january: where did you go?

celebrating the chinese new year

Hey, January. you went as slow as molassases, yet I can’t quite believe you are over. All the normal stuff started up again, yet nothing is feeling normal in life right now. February better be all figured out, that’s all I am saying. Anyways . . .

What I’m Reading: This is the most exciting category, because I have been reading a TON! Taking a break from Facebook has left oodles of time for real bread-and-butter reading. I mentioned a few books a couple of weeks ago (my fav: Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness), and I started a deep love affair with Madeline L’Engles prose (she writes about motherhood+being a wife+being a writer and calls it The Irrational Season. Swoon). I also started a book about God and pregnancy (Creating with God, so far so good) and I am currently devouring 7: an Experimental Mutiny Against Excess (expect to hear much more on this in a week or so). And I read some other stuff that is maybe not as good as what has already been listed. I told you, I have been a reading fool.

What I’m Watching: Downton Abbey. You should be too. Also, the baby and I are pretty into Sesame Street (around 20 minutes a day, thanks to early early early AMs). That stuff holds up well, my friends.

What I’m Listening to: OK, I have been in a huge “worship music” kick which I know is not everyone’s cup of tea. But I am in that phase of my life where if I hear a song about Jesus and his kingdom and less of us and more of him and crying out for forgiveness and grace and justice for the broken–well, I just have to sit on my bed and cry. And that is a good and precious place to be. I practically wore out the album Homemade Worship by Handmade People  by the Rend Collective Experiment. I could just sob thinking about it. Such. Good. Lyrics. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they sound a little like Mumford. Please, please check them out on Spotify and then be a good Christian and purchase the album as well.

What I’m looking forward to next month: Hmmmm. Honestly? January felt super restless and transitiony without any closure. So February, you better step it up and deliver. In other news, due to childcare/financial dilemmas, I may or may not be going to the Justice Conference. I would dearly love to stalk Shane Claiborne and John Perkins and Miroslav Volf, but that might not be happening.

I am looking forward to training for the 15k in the freezing rain, of finding pleasant indoor activities for the baby, of not buying a single item of clothing for a month, of getting some stuff published (in print!?!), of picking up the uke-banjo again, of continuing on in my reading frenzy, and of listening more and talking less.

What about you? How was the first month of 2012?

  1. “Hey, January. you went as slow as molassases, yet I can’t quite believe you are over.”

That is just the truth, isn’t it?

I am checking out the Rend Collective thing right this very minute. Sounds exactly perfect for me.

Thanks so much for playing along!

  2. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO THE JUSTICE CONFERENCE. Also, if you want to be serving staff on the eve of the 23rd you can make Shane dinner (with me!)
